The good news is that therapy is tailored to you — your needs, preferences, communication and learning styles, feedback, unique life circumstances, etc! Early sessions are meant to be comfortable conversations to get to know you, including your identities, concerns, strengths, values, family structure, goals and anything else you would like to share. Over time, we can work to set and work towards goals if this is the style that works best for you. Alternatively, we can dive into yourself to gain insight into patterns, your relationship to yourself and others, attachment styles, life experiences and anything else that would be worthwhile for your healing journey. Safety is of utmost priority, meaning that we will go at at a speed and discuss topics that you choose.

Come as you are and we will navigate that together! Starting with a free consultation is a wonderful opportunity to start exploring your counselling goals, and see whether my services can meet your needs. Next, we can book an initial 50 or 75 minute session to discuss important policies, learn more about you and get a sense of what this therapeutic relationship might look like. You can choose how often to continue sessions from then on, and we can adjust the schedule as needed.

I often find that most clients start with biweekly sessions, but others prefer weekly or monthly depending on your needs and financial status. Together, we can find our a schedule that works for you and can change as needed.

If you have wandered across my page and were excited to read this question for advice, that may be all the confirmation that you need to determine that this is right for you. Other signs may be that you have been considering getting support for a while, your current support system is limited, or you have had a recently life change and/or transition. You may feel like you are struggling to cope, and want to develop some new skills to navigate current life challenges. Maybe all you are looking for is a safe space to be yourself, vent, cry and be heard. Whatever it is, this space is for you.

Note that counselling is a shared responsibility. My job is to help guide us if needed, help co-create a space that is safe and comfortable, teach you about the process and empower you to use this space as needed for you. Your task is to remain engaged, provide feedback, identify what you may want to work on (with support!) and show up as yourself. I often recommend that individuals note down throughout the week if something comes up that would be worth discussing in therapy. That being said, if you don’t have a clue what to talk about, I am always there to provide some prompting and guidance based on identified goals and past conversations.
